COMPOST TOILETS
Non-flushing or composting toilets have been developed
for non - sewered areas to conserve the enormous use of water while
converting waste into disease free compost which can be safely used on
the garden.
The flushing toilet is responsible for about one third
of all water used in an average Australian household - a total of about
78 billion litres of quality water is flushed down the nation's toilets
every year ! The cost of supplying this water and disposing of it is
enormous - in an 11 year period local and state governments spent $10.6
billion on sewerage system treatment
NO NASTY SMELLS - When installed correctly these toilets
provide optimum conditions for the natural hygienic process of
composting to occur. It allows for aerobic composting to happen -
composting with air. Non - aerobic composting systems are responsible
for nasty smells.
NO NEED TO FLUSH - Composting is a natural process which reduces the
demand on water supplies and doesn't create any pollution. The system
uses gravity and is based below the toilet room. The toilet 'pedestal'
is similar to a flush toilet except there is no 'S' bend, cistern or
flush button
